Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center:

A major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is renowned for excellence in patient care, biomedical research, teaching, and community service. Located in the heart of Boston's medical community, it serves more than half a million patients annually in Boston and in communities north, west, and south of the city.

Decades before Beth Israel and Deaconess hospitals came together as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, each was a leader in health care with a long history of personalized patient care and community service. In 1896, as part of their missionary charter, Methodist deaconesses founded Deaconess Hospital to care for the city's residents. In 1916, Beth Israel Hospital was established by the Boston Jewish community to meet the needs of the growing immigrant population.

Today, the medical center is known for clinical expertise in the following areas: solid organ transplantation, cancer (with emphasis on breast cancer), diabetes/vascular surgery, obstetrics, cardiology, cardiac surgery, women's health, and AIDS. Beth Israel Deaconess also serves as the principal tertiary/academic resource for CareGroup, a team of healthcare providers that comprises three hospitals and more than 1,800 physicians. Included in the network are Beth Israel Deaconess, Mount Auburn and New England Baptist. One of their noted physicians is Dr. Jerome Groopman, who has written many books and articles about patients, their families and their doctors and the experience of what we can all learn about living during a severe catastrophic illness.

Dana Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund:

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is ranked “one of the premier cancer centers in the world” by the National Cancer Institute. Since its founding in 1947 by the late Sidney Farber, M.D., Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been committed to a single mission: providing cancer patients with the best treatment available today, while developing the cures for tomorrow. Its researchers are also making strides against illnesses as devastating as AIDS and as ordinary as the common cold.

The Institute is world-renowned for its unique blending of basic and clinical research, and for carrying new treatments from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside. A principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, the Institute is one of 28 federally designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and 12 Centers for AIDS Research. In addition to providing advanced training for cancer physicians and researchers, the Institute conducts community-based programs in cancer control and detection throughout New England.

At Dana-Farber, caregivers practice what Dr. Farber called “total patient care.” Staff members are concerned not only with meeting patients’ medical needs, but also with addressing their psychological and social concerns and the family issues that often arise with serious illness.

Much of the work of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is made possible by generous supporters of the Jimmy Fund, the fundraising organization named for one of Dr. Farber’s young patients. Founded in 1948 by the Variety Club of New England in conjunction with the Boston Braves baseball club, the Jimmy Fund had been adopted as the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and the annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge bicycling fund-raiser.

Each year, thousands of volunteers and donors organize and participate in Jimmy Fund events, raising millions of dollars to support Dana-Farber’s research and treatment programs. Today the Jimmy Fund is known as one of America’s favorite charities. In addition, groups such as the all-volunteer Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute form a vital part of Dana-Farber’s large family of supporters.

Since its inception, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has worked together with Children’s Hospital in the fight against children’s cancers, both in patient care and in collaborative research programs. In 1996, Dana-Farber joined Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital to create Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, a joint venture that offers adult cancer patients the combined strengths of three of the world’s leading centers for cancer care and research.

Joslin Diabetes Center:

Established in 1898, Joslin Diabetes Center is internationally recognized in diabetes treatment, research and patient and professional education. At its Boston headquarters, Joslin offers a wide range of clinical services, including adult diabetes/endocrinology; ophthalmology; nephrology (kidney care); pediatric diabetes and endocrinology; pregnancy and diabetes services, mental health, nutrition, exercise physiology, and a range of patient education programs. In addition to its clinical activities Joslin has a large research program that includes laboratory and clinical research in immunology, genetics, epidemiology, metabolism, cellular and molecular physiology, eye research, islet transplantation and cell biology and more.
